 | Drum making is a popular extra-curricular activity at MSD.In the past four years, students and some staff members have built almost 40 drums. Most of them were in the Djembe style and use traditional lacing and African goat skins. Recently we have been making them using more exotic woods such as Purpleheart, Tigerwood, Walnut and Oak, but these are quite heavy. Salix and Pine are lighter woods and easier to shape for the younger students. Of course all the drums get a special treatment from their builders when they burn, rout or carve a design into the drum before skinning. |
