Policies - Summary of Technology at MSD

MSD is a modern school offering technical advances such as a visual announcement and classroom communication system, high-end videoconferencing equipment, videophone equipment, a studio and a Multi-media Centre. 


There are 3 main categories of technology used at the school.  These are:


1)      A networked computer system


a)   The networked computer system enables staff and students to access their digital information from almost any workstation in the building.  All classrooms, offices,and  the multimedia centre (MMC) have at least one workstation connected to the network.  Some areas have multiple workstations based on the usage needs of that area.  There are 2 computer labs, one on each floor, and additional workstations located in the MMC. 




2)      Technology for communication and alerting


a)   The media retrieval system, known as the Crestron system, has a dual purpose.  The system was designed to allow classroom teachers to access up to 6 different media at a time without leaving the room.  One workstation is used to run daily announcements shown in the hallways on TVs throughout the school.  Each classroom has a TV that is connected to the system. 


i)    The Crestron system is also used as a communication system.  Attached to each of the TVs in classrooms there is a small camera.  In the main office is a control room.  Each classroom can be contacted from the control room and the control room can be contacted from each classroom.  This allows communication to be visual (ASL) and replaces the P.A. system found in hearing schools.


b)  Tanberg system for distance communication


c)   Videophone and d-link phones are available for staff and students to call outside of MSD.


d)   A room alerting system (green button “doorbells”) located outside each room that when pressed flash lights inside the room alerting those within that someone is at the door.




3)      Multi-media technology: editing, equipment, and studio


a)   The studio room in MSD houses technology for the production of multimedia projects. There is a variety of multi-media equipment including: a video editing workstation, digital cameras, video cameras, and closed captioning equipment.  A multi-media assistant works with staff and students to produce a variety of projects.


b)   There is a variety of equipment available for staff and student use at MSD for supporting teaching and learning in a visual Deaf friendly environment. 

Studio News

The MSD studio houses multimedia equipment for filming, editing and production of multimedia projects.  Students further their use and knowledge of ASL through the creative process using a variety of software programs and equipment. 


What is Information and Communication Technology (ICT)?


Information and communication technologies include computers, laptops, digital cameras, video cameras, digital microscopes, scanners, cell phones, electronic games, digital audio devices, global positioning systems, electronic whiteboards, the Internet, et cetera.  ICTs in the classroom will continue to evolve as new technologies emerge over time.


What is Literacy with ICT (LwICT)?


Literacy with ICT means choosing and using ICT, responsibly and ethically, to support critical and creative thinking about information and about communication as citizens of the global community.

This representation shows the relationship between ICT literacy (i.e., demonstrating ICT skills) and literacy with ICT (i.e., choosing and using ICT, responsibly and ethically, to support critical and creative thinking about information and about communication across the curriculum).  ICT literacy is a critical component of literacy with ICT, but it is not sufficient in itself.


 How do students develop their literacy with ICT?


Literate students choose and use ICT, responsibly and ethically, to support their critical and creative thinking about textual, numerical, visual, and aural information as citizens of the global community.  They develop this literacy through a process of inquiry across the curriculum as they plan, question, gather and make sense of information to show understanding, and communicate about, and reflect on, their learning.  These skills are most effectively developed within curricular context rather than on their own.

Cyber Safety

Online Safety Rules

I will not give out any personal information online without my parents' permission.  This includes my name, phone number, address, e-mail, location of my school, my parents' work address/ telephone numbers and credit card numbers, and my picture.  This goes for anywhere on the internet, including e-mail, chat rooms, newsgroups - even Web pages that I make myself.

  • When using the internet, I will always use a pretend name or nickname that doesn't reveal whether I'm a boy or a girl.
  • When creating a password, I will make one up that is hard to guess but easy for me to remember. To avoid having it stolen, I will never reveal it to anyone (expect my parents) - not even my best friend.
  • I will not respond to any message that makes me unconfortable.  I will show an adult right away.
  • I will arrange to meet a friend I have made on the internet ONLY if one of my parents has been informed and will be present.
  • I will not send an insulting or rude message to anyone online. This is called "flaming" and it is not good Netiquette.
  • I will not disable any filtering software my parents have put on the computer.
  • I will not open e-mail, files, links, pictures or games from people that I don't know or trust. I will always ask an adult first.
  • I will not take words, pictures or sounds from someone else's Web site without their permission.
  • I will not believe everything I read on the internet.  I will always check the source of the information and confirm it with my teacher, parent or libraian.
